Longtime MSNBC host Chris Matthews was absent from the network’s live coverage of the South Carolina primary last week. Then, a few days later he announced his retirement. This is after GQ columnist Laura Bassett filed a sexual harassment claim against the host.

About Sexual Harassment

Matthews Chris PROMOPICIt is important that when unwelcome conduct crosses the line and becomes severe or pervasive enough to create an intimidating, hostile or offensive environment to seek the advice from a lawyer. We can offer advice and help. Men and women both are guilty of sexual harassment.  A harasser can be anyone. He or she can be a supervisor, coworker or even a non-employee of the company. Anyone affected by offensive conduct could be eligible for a claim, even if he or she is not a direct victim of sexual harassment.

Chris Matthews Sexual Harassment Claim

In a GQ opinion piece, the longtime columnist Laura Bassett detailed sexual harassing comments she experienced. She did not name Chris Matthews at first. She described in 2016 while a guest on his show to talk about sexual assault allegations against President Trump the host harassed her. While in the makeup chair next the Matthews, he kept asking her why he hadn’t fallen in love with her yet. Then, when she tried to stand up, he stood between her and mirror and complimented her red dress. Matthews continued to ask her if she was going out that evening before instructing the makeup artist to remove the makeup before she left. He didn’t want another guy looking at her.

Bassett noted that the behavior isn’t illegal or elicit, however the comments undermined her ability to do her job well. Even though she didn’t name him, dozens of women reached out to her and said they experienced similar behavior from the host. Chris Matthews, 74, has been the host of “Hardball” for more than 20 years.
This isn’t the first time Chris Matthews has been accused of derogatory comments against women. Over the past decades, he has joked about using a “Bill Cosby pill” on Hillary Clinton before a 2016 interview. He has made comments about the physical appearances of Erin Burnett, Margaret Brennan, Sarah Palin and Melania Trump. Also, in the late 1990s he received a formal reprimand for inappropriate comments and jokes he made about a woman in front of CNBC staff. That woman was reportedly given a separation payout from the network.
