Roundup is the most widely used herbicide used to kill weeds infiltrating agricultural crops. It uses the active ingredient called glyphosate, which was first commercialized by Monsanto in 1974.
Roundup Dangers
Currently, it is estimated that around 185 million pounds are used each year. Because of Roundup’s success, Monsanto introduced genetically modified Roundup Ready crops to help improve a farmer’s ability to control weeds. It is estimated that 70% of corn and cotton and 90% of soybean crops are Roundup Ready crops, which generates $6 billion in revenue for Monsanto each year.
Monsanto has denied that Roundup causes cancer since the 1990s when Roundup first exploded on the market. However, in the past few years, many studies performed in the United States, Canada, and Sweden found increased rates of non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma and other cancers from glyphosates like Roundup. Due to the mounting evidence of glyphosate being a carcinogen, numerous countries have restricted or banned Roundup and other herbicides.
California Takes Action
The state of California’s Office of Environmental Health Hazard Assessment will list glyphosate as cancer-causing under an initiative to inform residents of cancer-causing chemicals called Proposition 65. Monsanto submitted over 8,000 comments including a 17-page comment against the proposition.
