In 2016, The Center for Injury Research and Policy published a study of hospital emergency visits from 1990 to 2010 and found more than 360,000 children ages 5 or younger went to the ER for stroller injuries. A majority of the injuries recorded were soft tissue injuries. However, a quarter of stroller injuries were concussions and traumatic brain injuries. There are 17,000 injuries per year where a child falls out of the stroller or the device tips over. The study found 23.7 percent increase in juries related to nursery products. Out of these, 17 percent are from stroller injuries.
These injuries originated from a stroller tipping over and the child hitting his or her head and/or face. Between 1990 and 2000, there were 361,000 children under five with head injuries. These numbers are increasing. Then, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission did a study between 2008 and 2013 and found nearly 1,300 report of children age four and younger in mishaps. This caused four deaths, four hospitalizations and almost 400 serious injuries.
Stroller Defect Injuries
In 2015, the CPSC put new federal safety standards with minimum safety requirements on all carriages and strollers sold after September 10, 2015. The standard mandates that all strollers and carriages be made, tested and labeled to minimize a variety of hazards, including:
- Hinge issues that have resulted in pinched, cut, or amputated fingers or arms. Hinges have the highest injury rate of all hazards associated with strollers.
- Broken and detached wheels
- Parking brake failures
- Locking mechanism problems
- Restraint issues, broken, loose, and easily unbuckled stroller seat belts
- Structural integrity
- Stability

Since 2009, there have been multiple stroller recalls.
Fall risk recalls:
- In September 2017, Delta strollers due to broken stroller’s leg bracket.
- In February 2012, Kelty single and double jogging strollers since the front wheel loosened.
- In December 2011, Bugaboo Bee strollers due to front swivel wheels locking while the stroller is in motion.
Brake failure recalls:
- In June 2011, Britax B-Nimble strollers due to clicking during brake pedal pressing yet the brake did not work.
- In June 2009, Bugaboo Bee strollers brake failures.
Choking hazard recalls:
- In October 2011, B.O.B. jogging strollers logo batch could detach.
Strangulation and entrapment risk recalls:
- In July 2012, Peg Perago strollers since a baby’s head could pass through the opening of the tray and seat.
Hinge hazard recalls:
- In November 2014, Graco strollers folding hinge on the sides of the stroller could squeeze a child’s fingers.
