Amaryl

According to a BMJ study, people with type 2 diabetes who switch to sulfonylurea drugs like Amaryl to control blood sugar levels are at an increased risk of myocardial infarction, all-cause mortality, and severe hypoglycaemia.

About Amaryl

Amaryl (sulfonylurea) is an oral diabetes medicine that helps control blood sugar levels. Insulin or other diabetes medicines are sometimes used in combination with Amaryl if needed.  Usually, this type of medication should be a second-line treatment in patients with type 2 diabetes.

Amaryl Myocardial Infarction Link

A study by BMJ showed a link between Amaryl and myocardial infarction. During the randomized controlled trial, researchers used medical records for over 14 million people registered at over 680 general practices. The study noted all medications used along with lifestyle variables. These include smoking and alcohol use.

Researchers noted a baseline of individuals using metformin in monotherapy for type 2 diabetes between April 1998 and March 2013. The study also showed that those who switched from metformin to Amaryl or other sulfonylurea drugs were more likely to experience myocardial infarction, ischaemic stroke,  hypoglycaemia, and cardiovascular death.

These risks jumped almost 10% as compared to those just using metformin medications.

History of Cardiovascular Trouble

This isn’t the first time researchers have linked Amaryl to myocradial infarction. In 2009, BMJ published another study comparing metformin and Amaryl. They also found that sulfonylureas medications brought an 18% higher risk of developing congestive heart failure. Through a mean follow-up of 7.1 years, there were 3,588 incident myocardial infarctions, 6,900 cases of congestive heart failure, and 18,548 deaths.
