A new study published in the New England Journal of Medicine confirmed that 1 in 1,000 may develop the perilous side effect of diabetic ketoacidosis. Diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA) is a dangerous complication of diabetes. Doctors hospitalized 14% of all diabetics because of it. This illness can lead to coma and death. Researchers link 16% of all diabetes-related deaths to DKA.

Invokana & Diabetic Ketoacidosis Study

In the new study, researchers at Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston analyzed data from 40,000 people with type 2 diabetes. They found that those taking SGLT2 inhibitors like Invokana were twice as likely to develop diabetic ketoacidosis.
This illness is more common in type 1 diabetics, so doctors do not keep a look out for it. Because of this, it is suspected that the number of those affected may actually be higher than once presumed.

About Diabetic Ketoacidosis

ketoacidosisSGLT2 inhibitors work by lowering blood glucose by increasing the amount of glucose eliminated through the urine. However, the drugs may interfere with hormone levels. This leads to an unhealthy rise in ketone acids. When the ketones build up, this brings diabetic ketoacidosis.
Doctors can treat mild DKA, however, extreme cases can be complicated. Treatment course consists of insulin therapy, electrolyte, and fluid replacement. Early detection is crucial. The complications for DKA are extremely life-threatening. They are coma, hypothermia or oliguria. Oliguria is when a patient produces not enough urine.
