Who hasn’t used talcum powder at one point in his or her life? Either to help treat diaper rash, absorb moisture or as a deodorant? Did you know that new research is showing that this silky white powder is being linked to ovarian cancer? Most shocking is that baby powder manufacturer, Johnson & Johnson has known for over 20 years and has said nothing.
During the court case of the Estate of Jacqueline Fox v. Johnson & Johnson, internal company memos from Johnson & Johnson medical consultants surfaced. The 1997 memo stated “anyone who denies [the] risks between hygienic talc use and ovarian cancer would be publicly perceived in the same light as those who denied a link between smoking cigarettes and cancer. Denying the obvious in the face of all evidence to the contrary.”
This directly correlates to the 2013 Journal of Cancer Prevention Research study. It showed that women who dusted their groin area with talcum powder had a 20-30% increased risk of developing ovarian cancer than women who did not use talc products. Yet, Johnson & Johnson still have failed to warn consumers of the danger of talc powder. They continue to market its baby powder as a safe product for use in infants and women despite this growing body of evidence linking it to ovarian cancer.
Women need to know the risk of talcum powder use. One woman in South Dakota used talcum powder for 30 years after her shower. She had cancerous tissues removed from all over her body. Talc was found inside the tumors. Doctors said that these talc particles caused her cancer.
At least the court understands the dangers and is trying to balance the neglect of Johnson & Johnson. A Missouri jury just awarded $72 million to the family of Jacqueline Fox who died from ovarian cancer, which they said was caused by using Johnson & Johnson’s baby powder. The jury had to have been very distressed by the company’s conduct and found the evidence very compelling.
