About Sexual Harassment

Men and women both are guilty of sexual harassment.  A harasser can be anyone. He or she can be a supervisor, coworker or even a non-employee of the company. Anyone affected by offensive conduct could be eligible for a claim, even if he or she is not a direct victim of sexual harassment.

Dartmouth Sexual Misconduct

Last year, 15 undergraduate, graduate, and postdoctoral students in the Department of Psychological and Brain Sciences wrote to the school newspaper, The Dartmouth. They alleged that three tenured professors created a normalized sexual harassment environment. Also, the professors violated at least one campus policy related to sexual misconduct, sexual harassment or consensual relationships between students and faculty. The 15 individuals wished to remain anonymous since the three accused professors sat on numerous grant-proposals review boards. Also, the professors had immense influence over the students’ professional futures.
In interviews with the newspaper, several students described an uncomfortable culture that often blurred the professional boundaries. Also, they felt pressured to drink often and in great quantitites on weeknights during business hours. Then at social events, the professors would pressure the women to drink a lot at social events. One student said she refused, but the professor claimed he was just being a good host. One time, one of these professors put his arm around a female student and slid it down her body. She described it as a test to see how far he could go.
After the students came forward, Dartmouth launched an investigation, and the three professors resigned.
