A male Uber driver sexually assaulted a passenger and has been arrested and accused of both kidnapping and assault. Friends began to worry when their female friend never arrived at her destination. They were horrified to learn that her 51-year-old Uber driver sexually assaulted her.

Uber Sexual Abuse

When the woman’s friends realized that she did not reach her destination. They began calling her multiple times. However, the phone was hung up at each ring. Eventually, a friend reached the Uber driver who answered the victim’s phone. He claimed to have trouble finding the house. Alarmed, the friends reached out to a family member who tracked her phone. It showed the victim was two blocks from the intended destination, therefore they went to find her.
Upon arrival, the woman was in the passenger seat upset and crying. The Uber driver fled. The rescue team discovered that the driver kept repeatedly locking the doors during the assault, so she could not leave. When police found the driver, he still had the victim’s phone. He is in police custody with a $360,000 bond.

Uber’s Response

According to Uber’s safety policies, any person found with a felony or violent misdemeanor conviction in the last seven years found through a mandatory background check and subsequent investigation is disqualified and cannot become a driver. Also, other violent or sexual crimes beyond the seven years  can also result in disqualification. This is only if these records are made available and reported to Uber.
The victim’s Uber driver had a harassment misdemeanor conviction from 2010. Uber never caught it.
