The internet is a haven for child abusers. Photos can live forever online. For example, a step-father took illicit photos of young sisters and posted them online. Even though the step-father went to jail, the photos are still in circulation. An investigation revealed that his photos are on over 130 child sexual abuse websites. Also, the digital trail extended to storage on Google Drive, Dropbox, and OneDrive. Unfortunately, this happens to thousands of children every year.
Sexual Child Abuse Victims
Tech Companies & Child Abusers
When it comes to digital child abuse, tech companies have the tools to stop Tthe recirculation of child pornography. However, many do not do anything to help. For example, Amazon, whose cloud storage services handle millions of uploads and downloads every second, does not even look for the imagery. Also, Apple doesn’t scan its cloud storage either. The same is said for Dropbox, Google and Microsoft as well.
Even though Yahoo and Snapchat search for photos, videos are not flagged. Even Facebook who claims to scan 90% of shared images won’t scan databases. In fact, tech companies scan for copyright enforcement, malware detection or facial recognition over abuse content.
Search Engines & Child Abuse
It isn’t just sharing photos through social media or cloud storage. In fact, many child abusers can use search engines to find the abusive content. Just this year, a computer tech from Texas had over 400 images of child sexual abuse on his computer. The man told authorities he used Microsoft’s search engine, Bing to find the photos and videos.
Even though Microsoft flags illicit content, child molesters use the search engine to find all the photos marked as abusive. They will also use the reverse image search feature to find other abuse content. This leaves thousands of victimized children continuing to be victimized.
