A jury sentenced a Catholic priest and former assistant pastor of a parish in Northwest Washington to 15 years in prison for sexually assaulting two young female members of his church. The priest denies that he assaulted the girls.
About Clergy Abuse
Priest Abuse
Abuses in the Catholic Church have been well-documented in the media. However, systemic abuse has occurred for centuries. Old church documents repeatedly warned of priests or brothers abusing parishioners. Instead of being active in protecting the victims, the Church has a reputation of concealing the abuse and reassigning the clergy members. This isn’t just in Catholic dioceses but also in religious orders (i.e., Christian Brothers, Paulist Fathers, Franciscans, etc).
Usually, the abuse lasts for years. It can take a long time for a child victim of sexual abuse to be able to come forward and report the abuse. Because monsignors, bishops, brothers, nuns, along with priests hold positions coupling trust and faith, victims don’t always identify the abuse. Some abusers claim the inappropriate sexual contact is part of a ritual. Then the perpetrators threaten the victims into silence.
DC Priest Receives Child Abuse Sentence
Victims described the priest as a “wolf in priest’s clothing” who used his charm, influence, and position to identify, isolate and prey on victims. Even when the parents learned of the abuse, church officials kept the priest in his position with the church.
The priest did not speak at his sentencing, but he submitted a nine-page handwritten letter denying all allegations. However, during the trial, it was revealed that he would go on secret vacations to Mexico with a woman. He also faces a misdemeanor sexual assault charge concerning an adult woman. That case will begin in September.
