Annual Report Shows Growing Risperdal Cases

According to a recent annual report, there are close to 20,000 Risperdal lawsuits pending against manufacturers, Johnson & Johnson and its subsidiary Janssen Pharmaceuticals. The report stated that Johnson & Johnson along with Janssen is involved in many product liability claims and lawsuits involving Risperdal and other products.

RisperdalRisperdal is a powerful second-generation antipsychotic approved for the treatment of schizophrenia, bipolar disorder and
autism spectrum disorders in children and adolescents. However, doctors regular prescribe the drug not just for the treatment of mental and autistic issues but in children with ADHD — a condition related to excessive motor activity, inattention, and impulsive behavior.

When this occurs, a medication is considered off-label, which means it is prescribed for uses not directly approved by the FDA. There are no laws against this, and it is very common in the medical community. Currently, 3.5 million children diagnosed with ADHD take Risperdal.

Risperdal Side Effects

The cases filed against Johnson & Johnson and Janssen state that Risperdal caused breast growth in boys. This condition is called gynecomastia. Risperdal greatly increases the levels of prolactin in more than 90% of users. Prolactin is a hormone that stimulates the production of milk in pregnant women. This causes breast development regardless of sex. Growths usually begin as a small lump under the nipple, while the nipple gradually grows larger and tenderer. This condition could affect both breasts or just one.

Recent Settlements

Many are filing against the company, and they are winning. Last July, a jury awarded $70 million in favor of the plaintiff. The plaintiff was an adolescent boy who grew male breasts after taking Risperdal. Additionally, in January of this year, Janssen settled a lawsuit three days before trial for a confidential amount.

This shows that these manufacturers know their product is dangerous but would rather throw money at the problem than fix it. Unfortunately, this medication will continue to hurt consumers.
