A study published in JAMA Internal Medicine suggests Xarelto causes more bleeding than Pradaxa. Researchers found that people using Xarelto may be more likely to have a serious bleeding event than those taking Pradaxa. This could explain why manufacturer, Johnson & Johnson is facing close to 20,000 Xarelto lawsuits.
JAMA Study: Xarelto Causes More Bleeding
Researchers examined the records of close to 120,000 Medicare patients with atrial fibrillation (Afib) who took either Xarelto or Pradaxa. They noticed Xarelto patients had more serious bleeding events than those taking Pradaxa. These events included intracranial hemorrhage (bleeding in the brain) and extracranial bleeding events including gastrointestinal bleeding.
Xarelto and Pradaxa are both oral anticoagulants approved for stroke prevention in patients with nonvalvular atrial fibrillation (AF). In 2011, Pradaxa tied for first place as the drug most linked to adverse event reports filed with the FDA. The FDA received reports of 3,781 serious, harmful events in 2011, as well as 542 deaths in the U.S. alone. This study suggests Xarelto may exceed those numbers.
No Way to Stop Bleeding
By stopping the blood from clotting, blood-thinners can prevent blood clots in people suffering from conditions such as atrial fibrillation. Due to the risk of unstoppable bleeding, researchers developed an “antidote” to stop this effect in the case of emergency in users of warfarin, the most popular anticoagulant for decades.
Xarelto users aren’t so lucky. There is no antidote to reverse the anti-clotting effect of Xarelto in an emergency. This means doctors and surgeons may have limited options. It means that what could be a treatable injury for most people can be a fatal one for Xarelto users.
