Anencephaly belongs to the neural tube birth defect category and is identified by the absence of a large part of the baby’s brain and skull. This devastating, fatal birth defect occurs early in the unborn baby’s development.
Causes
Anti-depressants: A study published in the New England Journal of Medicine links the maternal use of certain anti-depressants to 2.4 times increased a risk of anencephaly for the baby. The anti-depressants linked to this and other birth defects may include:
Effxor, a similar anti-depressant, is also being researched for a possible link to an increased risk of anencephaly.
Clomid: Use of the fertility drug Clomid during pregnancy is linked to 2.3 times the risk of anencephaly for exposed babies compared to unexposed babies according to a study conducted by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention(CDC).
Treatment
There is no treatment or cure for anencephaly. Most anencephalic babies will not survive to birth or long after birth.
Your Baby’s Rights
If your baby suffered from anencephaly that may have been caused by exposure to prescription drugs before birth, your family deserves financial compensation. Although no amount of money will reverse what happened to your baby, compensation will help offset any medical bills and costs of counseling, as well as provide for the pain and suffering you have experienced. Filing a claim will also teach the manufacturers of unsafe medications that it is unacceptable to not warn parents of the risks associated with these drugs, especially fatal birth defects. Your suit may even prevent other families from suffering as yours has, by forcing the pharmaceutical company to change their drug’s label to warn parents of the potential risks.
