Roundup Linked to Many Different Forms of Cancer

This is Erica Rehfeldt, Associate attorney for The Michael Brady Lynch Firm.

The World Health Organization (WHO) has warned that those who use Monsanto’s weed killer, Roundup are exposing themselves to non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma and other forms of cancer. Monsanto has denied these claims until WHO surveyed the research and concluded that herbicide has been linked to colon cancer, kidney cancer, liver cancer, melanoma, pancreatic cancer or thyroid cancer after being exposed to the weed killer.

Roundup is the most widely used herbicide used to kill weeds infiltrating agricultural crops. It uses the active ingredient called glyphosate, which was first commercialized by Monsanto in 1974. Currently, it is estimated that around 185 million pounds are used each year. Because of its success, Monsanto introduced genetically modified Roundup Ready crops to help improve a farmer’s ability to control weeds. It is estimated that 70% of corn and cotton and 90% of soybean crops are Roundup Ready crops, which generates $6 billion in revenue for Monsanto each year.

Monsanto has denied that the herbicide caused cancer since the 1990s when Roundup first exploded on the market. However, in the past few years, many studies performed in the United States, Canada, and Sweden found increased rates of non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma and other cancers from glyphosates, which are in herbicides. Due to the mounting evidence of glyphosate being a carcinogen, numerous countries have restricted or banned Roundup and other herbicides. Yet, our FDA does not even test our food for safe glyphosate levels.

Also, these studies show that exposure to the herbicide can cause DNA damage and DNA strand breaks along with other conditions such as autism or Parkinson’s disease. Monsanto still denies these studies and demands a retraction from WHO.
