A jury handed down a historic $2.4 billion Roundup verdict to a California couple who said Monsanto’s popular weed killer Roundup caused their cancer. This verdict includes more than $55 million in compensatory damages and is the third Roundup lawsuit.
Roundup Dangers
Currently, it is estimated that Americans use around 185 million pounds of Roundup each year. Because of Roundup’s success, Monsanto introduced genetically modified Roundup Ready crops to help improve a farmer’s ability to control weeds. It is estimated that 70% of corn and cotton and 90% of soybean crops are Roundup Ready crops, which generates $6 billion in revenue for Monsanto each year.
Monsanto has denied that Roundup causes cancer since the 1990s when Roundup first exploded on the market. However, in the past few years, many studies performed in the United States, Canada, and Sweden found increased rates of non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma and other cancers from glyphosates like Roundup. Due to the mounting evidence of glyphosate being a carcinogen, numerous countries have restricted or banned Roundup and other herbicides. However, America has not.
Historic Roundup Verdict Returned
Alva and Alerbta Pilliod, both in their 70s, used Roundup for around 30 years for residential landscaping. Both developed non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma between 2011 and 2015. Both are in remission. A jury in Oakland, California has awarded a couple $2.4 billion in punitive damages after concluding Roundup caused their cancer. Plus, the couple will receive an additional $55 million for pain and suffering and to cover medical expenses. The jury deliberated for less than two days.
