In May, new evidence emerged linking the contraceptive device, NuvaRing, to increased risk of blood clots and related health issues. The British Medical Journal (BMJ) published a study that found 6.5 times increased risk of life-threatening blood clots for women who use NuvaRing, as opposed to those who do not use a hormonal contraceptive. To read more about the study, my readers can access http://www.bmj.com/press-releases/2012/05/09/study-adds-evidence-clot-risks-non-oral-contraceptives
NuvaRing has achieved popularity, along with other “low fuss” hormonal contraceptives Ortho Evra Patch and Mirena IUD, as an easy alternative to a daily pill. The convenience of a ring that is easily removed and then replaced once a month has its advantages and, until recently, didn’t seem to come with the scary side effects of some birth control pills, including Yaz and Yasmin.
Now that a study in the respected BMJ has confirmed a connection between use of NuvaRing and serious blood clots known as deep venous thrombosis (DVT), the ring’s fan base is likely to diminish. Other significant health dangers that may be caused by the blood clots include:
- Pulmonary embolism – blood clot in the lungs, often a deadly condition
- Stroke – blood clot in the brain
- Heart attack – blood clot in the heart
- Death – all of the conditions above may prove fatal, even for healthy, young women.
I have considerable experience litigating birth control cases, including more than 100 women who I represented after they were harmed by the birth control patch Ortho Evra.
If you or someone you love were using NuvaRing and suffered a blood clot, pulmonary embolism, stroke, heart attack, of if you lost a loved one who was using the ring, please contact me directly for a free, no-obligation evaluation of your NuvaRing claim.
