Researchers Show Chelation Therapy for Gadolinium Doesn’t Work

The University of North Carolina recently published a study testing chelation as a remedy for removing gadolinium from rats. Chelation seems to be the only method doctors recommend removing the chemical. However, researchers found no benefits to the treatment.

About Gadolinium

Gadolinium RisksGadolinium is a chemical element carrying the atomic number 64 and the atomic symbol Gd. Belonging to a group of elements in the periodic table called Lanthanides, the chemical is a rare earth element typically used in microwave applications, color TV tubes, synthetic gemstones, compact discs, and computer memory. The medical community uses this chemical element as an injectable contrast agent when patients undergo magnetic resonance Imaging (MRI) and magnetic resonance angiography (MRA) scans.

Treatment for GDD

Treatment for GDD can be costly and expensive. It involves a combination of chelation and immune system modulation. Chelation is a medical process involving administering chelating agents to bond with metal ions to form a more chemically stable compound to safely excrete GBCA from the body. However, the FDA has not approved this process. The chemicals used in the process are only FDA approved for the removal of lead. Many don’t realize that the process removes important nutrients like calcium and zinc, too.
In addition, research shows that this process doesn’t remove all the gadolinium anyway. Also, symptoms can worsen.

IV Chelation

IV chelation is the strongest approach. The doctor will conduct a urine test to determine the body burden of various toxic substances.  He or she will then determine the appropriate chelating agent(s) and recommend a course of treatment.  Treatments are usually done between one and three times a week for a total of more than 20 sessions. Many people have had 50 treatments. Each treatment costs from $100 to $250 per session, and insurance doesn’t usually cover them.

Oral Chelation

Patients take a pill under the advisement of a doctor for oral chelation. Usually, supplements counteract the removal of good minerals by the chelating agent as it removes the toxic heavy metals. There are also sublingual powders used under the tongue instead of going through the digestive process.

Gadolinium ToxicityStudy Shows Chelation Therapy Doesn’t Work

Researchers at UNC injected rats intravenously with gadolinium. Then, attempted to chelate the chemical. However, the chelation process did nothing to help reduce the gadolinium concertation in any organ for rats. The researchers checked the kidney, brain, and femur in the animals. Yet, the chemical still remained.

The study did not identify any major benefits for chelation. Therefore, victims of gadolinium retention do not have any possible way to remove the chemical from their bodies.

Free Case Evaluation

Doctor Mri SmallA gadolinium lawsuit may be an option for patients suffering from gadolinium retention and related complications. Gadolinium, used in dyes to increase the clarity of MRI and MRA scans, can create chemical element retention in the body, Therefore, this increases the risk of gadolinium deposition disease and nephrogenic systemic fibrosis. These conditions are accompanied by symptoms that include severe physical pain and cognitive difficulties. Affected patients and their loved ones may be able to file a lawsuit and recover damages.
