The Journal of Nephrology and Hypertension has published a new study concerning gadolinium-based contrast agents. Researchers were shocked to discover the large amounts of gadolinium retention symptoms that plagued those in the study. Contrary to the current medical opinion, these symptoms happen regardless of kidney function.
About Gadolinium
Gadolinium is a chemical element carrying the atomic number 64 and the atomic symbol Gd. Belonging to a group of elements in the periodic table called Lanthanides, the chemical is a rare earth element typically used in microwave applications, color TV tubes, synthetic gemstones, compact discs, and computer memory. The medical community uses this chemical element as an injectable contrast agent when patients undergo magnetic resonance Imaging (MRI) and magnetic resonance angiography (MRA) scans.
Before undergoing an MRI or MRA, a gadolinium contrast agent is injected into the bloodstream and is stored in the blood vessels and abnormal tissue. This is so doctors can easily detect and trace any problems found within the body. Previously, researchers said this chemical element was safe for use in MRIs and MRAs. In fact, the element is very toxic.
The kidney expels the chemical after receiving the injection. However, regardless of kidney health patients can develop complications from the element spreading in the body. Now, researchers think they know how.
Discovered Gadolinium Retention Symptoms
During the study, researchers discovered that 100% of study participants with gadolinium retention symptoms experienced pain. The pain could be a dull or continuous ache, burning, numbness, tingling, prickling sensations, deep bone pain and/or electric-like feelings. The pain location could be in the extremities (feet, legs, hands or arms), hips, joints and/or ribs. Then, the study notes that 88% experienced muscle symptoms such as twitching or weakness. Whereas 76% had ocular problems such as worsening vision or dry, bloodshot eyes. Another 70% discovered dermal changes including discoloration, rash, skin lesions (ulcers, papules, macules, nodules, and other lesions), tight skin and thickened tissue. Sixty-five percent experienced both cognitive symptoms such as brain fog or difficulty concentrating along with ENT problems like ringing in ear, swallowing and voice problems. Plus, over 50% had low body temperature, hair loss, itchy skin, balance problems and swelling of extremities.
Those afflicted with gadolinium retention symptoms could have one of the above-listed ailments or a combination of multiple. The symptoms present regardless of kidney function. The medical community has long said that impaired kidney function causes gadolinium retention symptoms, however, this study disproves that theory.
Free Case Evaluation
A gadolinium lawsuit may be an option for patients suffering from gadolinium retention and related complications. Gadolinium in MRI and MRA scans can create chemical element retention in the body. Therefore, this increases the risk of gadolinium deposition disease. These conditions are accompanied by symptoms that include severe physical pain and cognitive difficulties. Affected patients and their loved ones may be able to file a lawsuit and recover damages.
