Is Your MRI Poisoning You?

The medical community has been using MRI and MRA scans for decades. They push that using contrast dyes for these procedures are the only way to get a clear picture. However, there are thousands of people left wondering after a scan if they contracted MRI poisoning.

About Gadolinium

Gadolinium is a chemical element carrying the atomic number 64 and the atomic symbol Gd. Belonging to a group of elements in the periodic table called Lanthanides, the chemical is a rare earth element typically used in microwave applications, color TV tubes, synthetic gemstones, compact discs, and computer memory. The medical community uses this chemical element as an injectable contrast agent when patients undergo magnetic resonance Imaging (MRI) and magnetic resonance angiography (MRA) scans.

MRI Poisoning

MRI poisoningMore people worry about MRIs and the possibility of shrapnel than gadolinium toxicity. The imaging system has a strong magnetic field that can slightly shift or heat up embedded metal and disrupt the activities of medical devices. It can also draw metal objects into the magnetic field. However, only seven out of almost 11,000 people experienced this side effect. Whereas, researchers showed that 32 out of 11,000 people experience gadolinium toxicity.
The FDA conducted a review of the AERS database along with additional literature and found many reports of gadolinium toxicity. Many of which happened within hours to days after receiving gadolinium die. The immediate symptoms listed are:

  • Pain and burning sensation at the origin site
  • Cognitive difficulties
  • Central nervous system problems
  • Skin and musculoskeletal complaints

Also, many end up bedridden or in wheelchairs due to their loss of mobility and pain. It doesn’t matter a patient’s health beforehand. Top level athletes or young parents have been unable to work again. Treatments are costly, and there is not a cure.

Treatment for GDD

Also, treatment for GDD can be costly and expensive. It involves a combination of chelation and immune system modulation. Chelation is a medical process involving administering chelating agents to bond with metal ions to form a more chemically stable compound to safely excrete GBCA from the body. However, the FDA has not approved this process. The chemicals used in the process are only FDA approved for the removal of lead. Many don’t realize that the process removes important nutrients like calcium and zinc, too.
Plus, research shows that this process doesn’t remove all the gadolinium anyway. Also, symptoms can worsen.

Free Case Evaluation

MRI poisoningA gadolinium lawsuit may be an option for patients suffering from gadolinium retention and related complications. Gadolinium, used in dyes to increase the clarity of MRI and MRA scans, can create chemical element retention in the body, Therefore, this increases the risk of gadolinium deposition disease and nephrogenic systemic fibrosis. These conditions are accompanied with symptoms that include severe physical pain and cognitive difficulties. Also, affected patients and their loved ones may be able to file a lawsuit and recover damages.
