Big Pharma Won’t Use Iron Chelates to Replace Dangerous Gadolinium

Rice University nanoscientists have discovered that loading iron inside nanoparticles to create MRI contrast agents outperform gadolinium dye. Even though iron chelates could be safer, pharmaceutical companies do not want Americans to use the alternative since these companies can’t profit off of iron chelates.

This is so doctors can easily detect and trace any problems found within the body. Previously, researchers said this chemical element was safe for use in MRIs and MRAs. In fact, the element is very toxic.
The kidney expels the chemical after receiving the injection. However, regardless of kidney health patients can develop complications from the element spreading in the body. But, not all contrast agents are alike. Some are riskier than others.


Iron Chelates Study

Iron chelates aren’t new science. Researchers discovered them more than two decades ago. Pharmaceutical companies said that these chemicals are impractical for contrast, however, the Rice University researchers think they are a better alternative.  Not only are the iron chelates safer for patients but also gives a clearer image. Gadolinium chelates were supposed to revolutionize MRI testing in the late 1980s. Medical professionals have used the dye more than 400 million times. Pharmaceutical companies say that gadolinium is a toxic metal, but their chelating process covers each gadolinium ion with an organic wrap. This wrap is supposed to reduce exposure and allow the drug to pass from the body via urination within a few hours. However, instead, gadolinium is poisoning people.

In 2013, Japanese scientists made the surprising discovery that gadolinium from contrast agents had accumulated in the brains of some patients, and subsequent studies found similar deposits in bones and other organs. Iron chelates, on the other hand, are 23 times more stable. Also, the body can more easily expel it. Yet, pharmaceutical companies are against iron chelates since they cost more to produce than gadolinium. Profitability and the bottom line rules these companies. It should be the safety of Americans, but it is not.
