Byetta Linked to Cancer In Rat Studies

This bad news for consumers as well as bad news for Eli Lilly and Amlyn Pharmaceuticals.
Recent studies have shown an increase of instances of thyroid cancer in rats treated with Byetta. It appears the drug may be following in the footsteps Novo Nordisk’s competing Victoza, which hold a similar warning. Granted, the Byetta dose given to rats in the study is 25 times the likely human dose. However, any time a drug increases a cancer risk (i.e., Actos) the risk-benefit analysis of the drug changes dramatically.

Byetta is also not new to safety challenges. Hundreds of lawsuits have already been filed alleging Byetta causes pancreatitis, renal failure, and pancreatic cancer.

I will be sure to keep on this emerging issue and post updates as they becoming available.
