An Alzheimer’s patient’s family have accused a Florida caretaker of abuse at the Royal Palm Retirement Center in Port Charlotte. The facility never reported the injury until the patient’s family had to file a police report.
About Elder Physical Abuse
Unfortunately, physical abuse of an elder is more common than most people would think as well. Physical abuse is any force that causes personal injury or pain. This includes striking, hitting, beating, shoving, among other actions. Physical abuse also can mean tying down an elder with unnecessary or brutal restraints that limit movement. This can lead to muscle atrophy and further degeneration of the muscles.
Florida Caretaker Abuse
The report indicated that the Florida caretaker placed an 84-year-old Alheizmer’s resident in a bear hug. Then, he wrestled and dragged the man back to his room. There the caretaker pushed him into the door and door frame. This caused injury to the left side of his head. A co-worker heard the noise and saw the injuries yet didn’t report it.
Then, a few months later a different co-worker witnessed the same Florida caretaker striking the man and dragging him back to his bed when he left his bed at night. The worker has also struck residents with belts and other objects. The facility did nothing to protect the resident until the family filed a police report.
