Researchers have linked Nexium along with other proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) to a more than a doubled risk of stomach cancer. This new study joins other research linking the medication to kidney infection, chronic kidney disease, and acute interstitial nephritis.

About Nexium

Nexium (esomeprazole) is a proton pump inhibitor (PPI). People take the medication to relieve the symptoms of gastroesophageal reflux disorder (GERD), commonly referred to as acid reflux. PPIs, such as Nexium, work by blocking the release of stomach acid. Consumers use Nexium to temporarily coat the esophagus to prevent damage.

The FDA did not approve Nexium for long-term use, and studies confirm that 70% of doctors should not have prescribed PPIs. It is one of the most overly prescribed drugs on the market. It is not a “healer” drug. Consumers should not use it for preventive care.

Nexium & Stomach Cancer

A new study in Gut shows a link between long-term use of Nexium and other proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) and gastric cancer. Researchers found that the risk of stomach cancer was proportionate to how long and how often proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) were taken. In fact, the risk increased up to eight times the longer the medication was used.  This risk increases for people infected with the bacteria Helicobacter pylori. Studies link this bacteria to stomach cancer. Eliminating the bacteria does lower the risk of stomach cancer. However, even after a doctor treats the bacteria, many people still develop stomach cancer.

Stomach cancer is the third leading cancer, which causes death in the world. Earlier studies linked PPIs and stomach cancer, however, the risk of Helicobacter pylori was unclear.

Long-Term Use Increases Risk

The study followed almost 64,000 patients. Researchers discovered that taking Nexium and other PPIs, in general, bring more than twice the risk of developing stomach cancer.  In addition, people who took PPIs every day increased their risk of stomach cancer four times, compared with those who used the drug once a week. Also, the longer someone uses PPIs, the greater the risk of developing stomach cancer. The risk rose five times after more than a year. Then, it rose to more than six times after two or more years, and to more than eight times after three or more years.
