Introduction
The recent developments in the litigation concerning hair straighteners in the U.S. has highlighted the issue of product safety and the protection of consumers’ rights. Many states have filed lawsuits against companies that make, distribute, and/or sell hair straighteners containing unsafe levels of formaldehyde.[1] These companies are accused of failing to adequately warn consumers of the risks associated with using their products, which include cancer.[2]
The filing of a lawsuit against a group of companies that manufacture and distribute hair straighteners with potentially hazardous levels of formaldehyde has occurred in several states. The defendants include some of the largest hair care manufacturers. This lawsuit is part of a larger campaign that is aimed at ensuring manufacturers of hair straighteners take responsibility for protecting consumers.
Formaldehyde is a known carcinogen, capable of causing cancer and other severe health conditions, when released in large doses. The case against these companies alleges that their products contain an unsafe amount of formaldehyde, and that the companies make false claims about the safety of the product. The suit further accuses them of failing to thoroughly test the product for potential risks and failing to provide homeowners with adequate warning of the dangers.
