Southern Baptist Clergy Sexual Abuse Scandal

3 min read

Introduction

In May, the Southern Baptist Convention unveiled a 300-page clergy sexual abuse report that demonstrated multiple injured victims from clergy members of the Southern Baptist Church.[1]

The Abuse

According to the Texas Observer, the Southern Baptist Convention held just last month revealed a clergy sexual abuse scandal that left “An epidemic of violence in broken lives.”[2]

This came from an investigative report[3] published just recently. The report indicated that there were rampant clergy sexual abuse allegations and claims for a significant period of time inside the Southern Baptist Church, which is the largest denomination in the south.

The Tennessean helped unveil the publication and revealed that it had a report that showed a history of abuse from the church where, “Southern Baptist Convention leaders perpetuated a cycle of abuse for two decades by ignoring reports of sexual abuse and dismissing recommendations for reform, enabling a culture that retraumatized survivors, investigators found in a historic report released Sunday.”[4]

Among the allegations was a credible allegation of a sexual assault by the former Southern Baptist Convention president, Johnny Hunt, which was unveiled, “a month after his term ended in 2010 and how high-ranking staff maintained a list with hundreds of names of ministers accused of sexual misconduct but did nothing with it.”[5].
