PFAS (per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances) are man-made chemicals widely used in firefighting foam, nonstick cookware, water-resistant fabrics, and other consumer products . Known as “forever chemicals” due to their extreme resistance to breakdown, PFAS persist in the environment and bioaccumulate in human and animal tissues. Extensive scientific research has linked PFAS exposure to serious health risks, including several cancers, liver damage, immune system impairment, and hormonal disruptions .
PFAS Contamination in Jacksonville
Jacksonville’s municipal water system, operated by JEA, conducts ongoing testing of the water supplies to ensure its safety and compliance with contamination standards . However, areas surrounding military sites, such as the former Naval Air Station Cecil Field—which has been designated a Superfund site by the EPA—have experienced significant PFAS contamination . Other areas in Jacksonville where contamination from PFAS has been identified include the Jacksonville International Airport and the Naval Air Station in Jacksonville .
The Department of Defense continues to investigate contamination at these locations through the PFAS Task Force .
Signature Injury with PFAS Exposure
The most serious signature injuries associated with PFAS exposure are kidney and testicular cancer . Additionally, lawsuits have cited other related conditions, such as liver cancer, thyroid cancer, and ulcerative colitis .
Legal Action and Litigation
Across the country, individuals and municipalities are filing lawsuits against manufacturers of PFAS chemicals, including companies like 3M and DuPont. These lawsuits seek compensation for contamination cleanup and health damages.
Jacksonville residents affected by PFAS contamination may be eligible to join the multidistrict litigation (MDL 2873) currently active in federal court . Lawsuits related to PFAS contamination at military bases, airports, and industrial sites have been filed in Florida, with ongoing investigations and settlements underway.
