Nursing home abuse involves the mistreatment, neglect, or exploitation of residents in long-term care facilities. This includes skilled nursing homes, assisted living facilities, and other institutions responsible for the care of elderly or vulnerable adults. Under both federal and state laws, these facilities are required to provide residents with a safe, dignified, and compassionate environment. Unfortunately, far too many nursing homes fall short of this standard, putting some of our most vulnerable citizens at risk. [1]
What’s Happening in Nursing Homes?
Abuse and neglect in nursing homes are widespread, systemic issues. Reports highlight significant failures in many facilities, often stemming from:
- Understaffing: Insufficient staff-to-resident ratios mean residents’ needs go unmet. [2]
- Inadequate Training: Staff members may lack the skills to address residents’ complex medical, emotional, and physical needs.
- Negligent Oversight: A lack of proper monitoring can lead to untreated medical issues, unsanitary conditions, and preventable injuries like falls or bedsores.
- Financial Exploitation: Some staff or administrators exploit residents by stealing money, altering wills, or misusing funds. [3]
- Emotional and Physical Abuse: In some cases, staff members resort to physical harm, intimidation, humiliation, or verbal abuse to control residents. [4]
Each of these failures represents a violation of duty and a breach of both state and federal regulations, including the Nursing Home Reform Act, which sets care standards for federally funded facilities.
What Injuries Does Nursing Home Abuse Cause?
The consequences of nursing home abuse and neglect are often severe and, in many cases, life-altering. Common injuries include:
- Medical Injuries: Bedsores, infections, malnutrition, dehydration, and untreated illnesses due to neglect.
- Physical Injuries: Falls, fractures, bruises, and head injuries caused by unsafe conditions or physical
- Emotional and Psychological Trauma: Anxiety, depression, withdrawal, and fear from verbal or emotional mistreatment.
- Financial Harm: Exploitation of a resident’s finances can create significant distress for them and their families.
In the most extreme cases, abuse and neglect can lead to wrongful death, underscoring how critical it is for families to stay alert and advocate for their loved ones.
