Introduction
California is the number one sexual human trafficking state in the United States. The percentage of human trafficking that occurs in the state of California is 3.77 persons per 100,000 people. Around 70% of the main cities human sex trafficking in the State of California consist of Los Angeles and San Diego. The amount of reported cases is 1334, with 1,025 of them being sex trafficking cases, the significant majority of which are female. Motels, hotels, and massage spas were the primary locations of the human sex trafficking. According to the World Population Review, the Orange County Human Trafficking Task Force in California states that about 24% of the victims are Hispanic, and 29% of the victims are African American.
What are the Laws against Human Trafficking in California
Under California Penal Code 236.1, human trafficking is:
(1) “Depriving someone of their personal liberty with the intent to obtain forced labor or services from them”, (2) “Depriving someone of their personal liberty with the intent to violate California’s pimping and pandering law California’s child pornography laws, California laws against extortion and blackmail, or certain other California laws concerning commercial sexual activity and the sexual exploitation of children,” or (3) “Persuading or trying to persuade a minor to engage in a commercial sex act, with the intent to violate one of those same laws.”
