Rideshare sexual abuse is a rapidly growing issue. Despite the protective measures put in place, some passengers are still falling victim to sexual predators [1]. This data will discuss the scope of the problem and look into the safety measures taken by rideshare companies [2].
Scope of the Problem
According to a 2018 survey, one-third of women have experienced some form of unwanted sexual conduct while on a rideshare service [2].
Sexual abuse on rideshares is not limited to a certain type of abuse. Passengers can be victims of sexual harassment, verbal abuse, physical assault, and more. Additionally, sexual abuse can occur during the ride, as well as when accepting or rejecting a ride from a driver.
Safety Measures Taken by Rideshare Services
Rideshare companies, such as Uber and Lyft, have implemented measures to increase passenger safety. These measures include driver screenings, customer support hotlines, in-app emergency buttons. However, these safety measures still do not always prevent the unwanted sexual assault or sexual advances that occur during the rideshare.
