According to the FDA, a recall of Edgewell Personal Care Companies Banana Boat Hair and Scalp Sunscreen was voluntarily recalled due to the product containing trace levels of Benzene.[1] The chemical is not found in their products usually, however, trace amounts have been found in their products and it is causing cancers in consumers. Benzene is a carcinogen and exposure to such can lead to multiple types of blood cancers developed from bone marrow or blood disorders. According to Jacob Burbink at the Hill, “[t]he CDC says people are exposed to benzene every day, including from tobacco smoke, gas stations, exhaust and industrial emissions.
Indoors, people can get exposed to benzene from glues, paints, furniture wax and detergents.”[2] The recall, which was scheduled on Friday, October 19, “recalled all continuous spray Banana Boat sun care products. The recall comes after noticing a potential risk of product igniting on the skin if contact is made with a source of ignition before the product is completely dry.”[3] There are no current lawsuits as of today, but this can be an anticipated litigation due to the growing number of people affected by this product and the severity of the injuries caused.
