According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the rate of fatal crashes rose from 3,200 to 4,500 from last year alone.

Cause of Fatal Motorcycle Accidents Increasing

There are many different reasons for the increase in fatal motorcycle accidents. Even though automobile accidents are down, these vehicles account for 56% of fatal motorcycle crashes. In nearly 80% of the time, a car will strike the motorcycle head-on. In these types of crashes, the motorcyclist often dies. Another dangerous collision is when a car makes a left-hand turn into a motorcycle. Experts think that due to the increase of distracted drivers on the road, they aren’t seeing cyclists. The National Safety Council (NSC) reports that 25% of all car accidents are related to the use of a cell phone.
The NHTSA reports motorcycles have a fatality rate of 72 per 100,000. Also, motorcyclists’ risk of an accident increasing per mile on the road. It is 35 times higher than a car driver. For example, in 2004, there were 37,304 auto crashes and 4,008 fatal motorcycle accidents.
