Uninsured Motorist Coverage is one of the most important coverages. This is because it pays for injuries even if the at-fault person doesn’t have any or enough liability coverage.  A new study by the Insurance Research Council (IRC) reported that approximately 23 percent of Florida drivers do not have car insurance. This is the fifth highest percentage of uninsured drivers in the nation.

Uninsured Motorist Coverage Is A Must In Florida

Uninsured Motorist CoverageUninsured and underinsured drivers are a big problem in Florida. This could be from lenient regulations regarding liability insurance. The Florida Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) estimates that one in seven Florida drivers does not have coverage.  Millions of Florida drivers are uninsured or only carry the bare minimum $10,000 of Personal Injury Protection (PIP) coverage and $10,000 in Property Damage Liability (PDL). PIP only applies to the driver that purchased the coverage. Therefore, even if the other party was negligent and caused the crash, the coverage will not apply for you. Additionally, PDL only applies to property damage that the negligent party causes. When seriously injured, chances are your car is totaled. Then, the $10,000 PDL won’t even pay for a new vehicle. Plus, all the medical costs could easily become thousands of dollars. This doesn’t even include pain and suffering.

Wide-Angle Protection

Florida drivers can purchase Uninsured Motorist Coverage (UM). There are two types of UM: split limit and combined single limit. A split limit policy will allow differing amounts to multiple people injured in the collision. UM not only covers the insured but also everyone in the vehicle. This includes hit and runs, phantom vehicle collisions, or being hit as a pedestrian. Also, UM coverage pays for lost wages, sickness, bodily injury, medical expenses, and diseases resulting from the motor vehicle collision.

It can be shocking after an accident to learn how expensive, time-consuming and frustrating the process can be. For many, pain does not present itself at the scene of the accident, however, the debilitating pain begins a day or two later. This can be difficult for many Americans who do not have health insurance or disability insurance.  Therefore, it can be difficult to receive medical attention or income while out of work.
