Monroe County led the state of Florida last year as the highest county in regard to the rate of deaths by motor vehicle accidents and suicides. The Medical Examiners Commission released the report since the organization tracks autopsies and death causes throughout Florida.
Common Car Accident Injuries
Car accidents are a leading cause of injuries. Every year, nearly 6 million people experience car accident injuries. Of these, over 30,000 were fatal. The most common injuries that people sustain after an accident are the head, neck, back and check injuries. These can vary from minor aches and pains to needing extensive medical treatment coupled with long-term medical care.
The Deadly Florida Keys
The administrator for the Florida Department of Health in Monroe County said that high car accident death rates are common. He explained there are multiple reasons for the high rates. One of these reasons is people driving while impaired on a two-lane road. About 75,000 people live in the Keys, but more than 5 million people visited the island chain last year.
It isn’t just accidents in The Florida Keys. Monroe County had the highest suicide rate in Florida.
