Researchers are perplexed why asbestos exposure is lowering but younger groups are continuing to suffer asbestos-related medical issues. In fact, mesothelioma diagnosis rates increased from 2,479 in 1999 to 2,597 in 2015. Those over 85 had the largest rate of cancer, but younger populations aren’t immune.
About Mesothelioma
Forming on the protective lining of the lungs and abdomen, malignant mesothelioma is a rare, asbestos-related cancer. Currently, there isn’t a cure. However, there are constant advancements and new therapies to help improve survival statistics.
High Mesothelioma Rates in Younger Populations
In the past almost 20 years, close to 17,000 people died from mesothelioma. A majority of those who died were between the ages of 75 to 84. However, during the same time period, almost 1,000 people between people between the ages of 25 and 44 died of mesothelioma-related problems.
Researchers speculate that asbestos has been in everyday products. These include children’s crayons, home insulation, vehicle brakes, hair dryers and even cigarette filters. According to the National Cancer Institute, studies have also suggested an association between asbestos exposure and gastrointestinal and colorectal cancers. Also, there is an elevated risk for cancers of the throat, kidney, esophagus, and gallbladder.
Since the 1970s, the Environmental Protection Agency has banned most asbestos-related products and materials in the United States, dramatically reducing the amount of asbestos used nationwide. Yet, even almost 40 years after the reduction, doctors are still diagnosing people with mesothelioma.
Mesothelioma Today
It is difficult to pinpoint why and what is causing this cancer since it can take anywhere from 20 to 50 years from exposure to develop mesothelioma. People have the same chance of developing cancer if exposed to a small level for a long period or high levels for a brief period. Plus, genetic predisposition comes into play. The asbestos exposure must exist, but those with the gene-environment interaction can develop cancer even with low levels of asbestos.
Coupled with routine screening is not part of a routine yearly checkup, people are not being diagnosed until the cancer is advanced. Screening for rare diseases such as mesothelioma is typically not included in a routine physical examination.
