There are almost 60,000 insulation workers in the United States. However, many are being exposed to the dangerous carcinogen, asbestos. These hard workers regularly come in contact with the deadly material, and now are receiving a mesothelioma diagnosis.

About Asbestos

Charles Deluvio QJa6WDmRNwM UnsplashWhen the asbestos industry was booming, families of workers were at great risk. Workers often came home with asbestos fibers in their hair, work clothes, and tools. This exposed family members to the toxic substance and increasing their risk of related diseases.
The National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) presented a Workers’ Home Contamination Study to Congress that showed “families of asbestos-exposed workers have been at increased risk of pleural, pericardial or peritoneal mesothelioma, lung cancer, cancer of the gastrointestinal tract, and nonmalignant pleural and parenchymal abnormalities as well as asbestosis.”
The active ingredient vermiculite is commonly used in the insulation industry. However, mining of this material usually comes with a cost. Researchers have linked vermiculite mines with increased asbestos mixed with the material. Loose-filled insulation may contain asbestos-tainted vermiculite.

Asbestos Rising with Insulation Workers

Since insulation could contain asbestos,  an insulation worker breathes in the material at work. The loose fibers break off from the insulation and enter the lungs. These fibers are so minute that workers do not see them, yet the particles flake off easily. These fibers can settle in the lungs and cause cancer. The two most common forms of mesothelioma are pleural and peritoneal mesothelioma. Pleural mesothelioma develops in the cells of the outer and inner lung linings and is the most common. Peritoneal mesothelioma develops in the abdomen lining and results in roughly 500 new cases each year.
A CDC Study followed almost 18,000 insulation workers over twenty years. Almost 300 workers developed mesothelioma. Researchers found these workers had a long latency period between 30 and 39 years. Therefore, even if you or a loved one was an insulation worker in the 1960s, your mesothelioma diagnosis could be the fault of your employer.
