Procedures at HealthPlus Surgery Center in Saddle Brook, New Jersey may have exposed more than 3,700 patients to blood-borne illnesses such as HIV, hepatitis B, and hepatitis C. Anyone who stayed there from January 2018 to September 7, 2018, for a procedure is at risk. The Department of Health closed the facility on September 7th until the 28th after discovering improper sterilization procedures. Also, they failed to comply with other regulations regarding the dispensing and storage of medication, as well as infection control planning and procedures.

Center Owner Failed Regulations on Other Facilities

This isn’t the first time surgical center in New Jersey to skip on safety practices. The owner of the Saddle Brook surgery center in Saddle Brook also owned another one in Hackensack. However, in April 2017, the Department of Health cited it for failing to meet safety regulations.
Inspectors also found that proper procedures weren’t in place for using multi-dose vials of medication in the operating room. The center later filed correction plans with the state, and they were accepted. Then, the owner, who has no previous experience running a hospital, purchased Meadowlands Hospital Medical Center in December 2017. The surgical center now in question refers patients to that hospital.
