Cancer and diabetes are major health problems for Americans. In fact, diabetes remains the leading cause of blindness, kidney failure, and non-traumatic lower limb amputation. Then, cancer continues to be a major cause of death since around 1 of 4 deaths in the United States is from cancer. Now, researchers are linking the two – diabetes medication, Invokana and cancer.
About Invokana
Invokana was the first in a new class of drug for Type 2 diabetics. It was supposed to help people easily manage their diabetes without insulin by lowering blood sugar by causing the kidneys to remove sugar from the body via urine. This prevents blood from reabsorbing the sugar. In March 2013, the FDA approved Invokana. However, by May 2015 they were warning that Invokana may lead to devastating side effects.
Invokana Cancer Links
The study showed 580 cases of bladder or kidney cancer in a total of 34,569 patients. These patients were from 46 independent randomized controlled trials. These trials had a mean duration of 61 weeks. Then, researchers compared the results with those receiving a placebo. The results showed increased evidence linking Invokana & cancer. However, the study could not identify the exact mechanism causing the increased cancer risk.
More Studies Needed
Despite this study and a few others, researchers keep saying that more studies on Invokana & cancer need to be performed. There is not a direct causation, yet. However, there is a strong correlation between Invokana & cancer. Since this correction exists, it is important to be aware of the symptoms of kidney and bladdy cancer.
