PFAS the common man-made chemical that many companies produced and distributed in a variety of products is sickening many across the United States. The chemical has infiltrated the drinking water and causes different cancers and diseases. Now, thousands are seeking help after getting sick from these cancer-causing chemicals.

About PFAS

PFAS dangersPFAS is a man-made chemical developed by 3M around World War II. The chemical is in is a group of synthetic chemicals found in several products, including carpeting, stain resistors, nonstick cookware, firefighting foam, Teflon, microwave popcorn bags, car waxes, wiring and more.
PFAS has leached itself into water supplies in 43 stated across the country.

PFAS Disease

Those exposed to PFAS can develop kidney cancer, testicular cancer, thyroid disease, high blood pressure, and preeclampsia. This chemical has a long half-life. This means it takes a long time for the chemical to leave the body. Researchers found that PFAS takes 5.4 years to halfway leave the body.

PFAS Neglect Costing Millions

Since PFAS has leaked into the drinking water in 43 states. There are mounting costs associated with cleaning up the contamination. Costs related to improving filtration systems, modifying production processes, or funding remediation projects.
It could take billions of dollars to correct. In February 2017, DuPont and Chemours agreed to a $671 million to settle 3,500 cases. The Washington Works plant in West Virginia infected the water with PFAS. Also, in February 2018, 3M agreed to an $850 million settlement with the state of Minnesota over allegations that its production of PFCs (perfluorinated chemicals) had polluted drinking water in the state. There are other states currently involved with lawsuits against DuPont, 3M, and Chemors for environmental contamination.

Manufacturers Knew

Documents obtained during the Minnesota state case show that 3M’s own research showed that PFAS does not breakdown in the enviroment. Plus, studies showed negative health effects in laboratory rats and other animals. Yet, 3M continued to sell PFAS compounds to Teflon and Gore-Tex. The company didn’t even inform the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. When the EPA learned of the dangers, 3M agreed to begin phasing out the use of PFAS.
PFAS dangersIn 1975, a researcher at the University of Florida College of Medinece discovered unusual levels of fluorine in the blood found in blood banks in both Texas and New York.  The team couldn’t figure out the cause. So, the study leader contacted 3M, the maker of the compound, for ideas on the contamination.

Instead of informing the public, 3M passed internal company messages to plead ignorance of the connection. However, 3M’s evidence showed PFAS stays in the environment and caused health problems.

In 2006, the EPA cited 3M for 244 violations of the Toxic Substances Control Act. The fine was $1.52 million, which was only 0.3% of its annual sales revenue from PFAS compounds.
