Early trials for Invokana demonstrated an increased risk of kidney and bladder cancer. However, the FDA still approved the medication and did not place a warning for the potential risk of Invokana cancer. Previous diabetic drugs such as Actos had massive lawsuits due to the failure to warn about the risk of bladder cancer. Now those taking this Type 2 diabetic drug could have a similar cancer risk.

About InvokanaInvokana & Cancer

Invokana was the first in a new class of drugs for Type 2 diabetics. It was supposed to help people easily manage their diabetes without insulin by lowering blood sugar by causing the kidneys to remove sugar from the body via urine. This prevents blood from reabsorbing the sugar. In March 2013, the FDA approved Invokana. However, by May 2015 they were warning that Invokana may lead to devastating side effects.

Invokana Cancer Studies

An Invokana study commissioned by the European Commission found that rat studies suggested an increased risk for renal, adrenal, and Leydig cell tumors. Researchers also pinpointed that the renal (kidney) function is paramount to the efficacy of Invokana. When a patient has impaired renal function, then their risk for Invokana cancer dramatically increases. Plus, the higher the dose of medication the more likely the patient could develop cancer. However, the evidence is not conclusive at this time. Therefore, this drug remains a huge safety concern. Many researchers are urging more studies with larger sample sizes, longer exposure duration and use of Invokana in difference ethnicities.
