The popular Type 2 diabetes drug, Invokana has now been linked to the side effect of genital gangrene. FDA demands that the manufacturers of the medication adjust the warning label to alert consumers of this dangerous side effect.
About Genital Gangrene
Fournier’s gangrene involves an infection in the scrotum, penis, or perineum in a man. Whereas, the infection in a woman is in the vulva or perineum. It usually gets into the body through a cut or breaks in the skin. The dead or dying tissue in people with this type of gangrene is often found in the genitals and can stretch to the thighs, stomach, and chest. Infection near the genitals causes Fournier’s. The infection occurs in 1.6 out of 100,000 males annually in the U.S. It most frequently occurs in males 50-79 years. The dead or dying tissue in people with this type of gangrene is often found in the genitals and can stretch to the thighs, stomach, and chest. Infection near the genitals causes Fournier’s. Those taking Invokana are at a heightened risk for skin ulcerations that make users susceptible to infections and amputations.
The FDA issued a warning recently, noting that Invokana increases the risk of a serious flesh-eating genital infection. According to the agency, there are multiple cases of this side effect with people taking Invokana. However, the agency expects there are many unreported cases. Manufacturers must now use new label infection warnings to all drugs that belong to the SGLT2 inhibitor class. These include Invokana, Invokamet, Invokamet XR, Farxiga, Xigduo XR, Qtern, Jardiance, Glyxambi, Synjardy, Synjardy XR, Steglatro, Segluromet, and Steglujan.
The FDA notes that the infections developed within several months of beginning treatment with one of the drugs and all patients underwent hospitalization and surgery. At least one patient died, while others suffered disfiguring surgeries and other serious complications.
