Human Trafficking in Florida

Introduction

Florida ranks third in human trafficking cases, with a filed 738 reports as of the latest data in 2020[1]. The majority of those reported in the human trafficking incidents were women of a ratio of about 6 to 1. Most of those reports came out of the central Florida area around Orlando[2]. Needless to say, it is a very serious problem in the state. We are a Winter Park based firm located right here in Central Florida, and we are attempting to help fight for justice for the victims of these human trafficking perpetrators.

Florida law

Under Florida State Statute §787.06(2)(d) “Human trafficking” means transporting, soliciting, recruiting, harboring, providing, enticing, maintaining, purchasing, patronizing, procuring, or obtaining another person for the purpose of exploitation of that person. §787.06 (3) Any person who knowingly, or in reckless disregard of the facts, engages in human trafficking, or attempts to engage in human trafficking, or benefits financially by receiving anything of value from participation in a venture that has subjected a person to human trafficking. §787.06(3)(c) For labor or services of any child younger than 18 years of age or an adult believed by the person to be a child younger than 18 years of age who is an unauthorized alien commits a felony of the first degree, punishable as provided in s. 775.082, s. 775.083, or s. 775.084.[3]  Here at the Michael Brady Lynch Firm, we have been helping victims litigate against perpetrators, specifically hotels, motels, and any other organization that has harbored or helped facilitate human trafficking.
