Gadolinium Dosage Doesn’t Change Toxicity Risk

According to the journal Radiology, researchers have found that the risk of Gadolinium Deposition Disease doesn’t change regardless of the gadolinium dosage received. Previously, studies said that people should only be worried about the debilitating illness when having multiple scans. However, researchers at the Children’s Hospital in Los Angeles disagreed. One scan or many, the risk for retention remains the same.

About Gadolinium

Headache 1Gadolinium is a chemical element carrying the atomic number 64 and the atomic symbol Gd. Belonging to a group of elements in the periodic table called Lanthanides, the chemical is a rare earth element typically used in microwave applications, color TV tubes, synthetic gemstones, compact discs, and computer memory. The medical community uses this chemical element as an injectable contrast agent when patients undergo magnetic resonance Imaging (MRI) and magnetic resonance angiography (MRA) scans.

Gadolinium Dosage Study

In 2014, a sentinel paper stated that gadolinium deposition disease depended on the dose. This means that the more contrast material a patient received the greater the chance gadolinium builds up in the brain. However, Dr. Benita Tamrazi disagreed. In her practice as a neuroradiologist at Children’s Hospital Los Angeles. Dr. Tamrazi started her own study of patients who had gadolinium in a contrast scan at least four times. She chose almost 150 patients and followed them between 2000 and 2015. She found that the previous notion of signal intensity changes as secondary to gadolinium deposition in the brain was much more significant in patients who had primary brain tumors treated with radiation. It is independent of gadolinium dosage. Dr. Tamrazi hopes this is the first step in showing that Gadolinium Deposition Disease needs to be further studied to help those afflicted with the illness.

Doctor Mri SmallA gadolinium lawsuit may be an option for patients suffering from gadolinium retention and related complications. Gadolinium, used in dyes to increase the clarity of MRI and MRA scans, can create chemical element retention in the body, Therefore, this increases the risk of gadolinium deposition disease and nephrogenic systemic fibrosis. These conditions are accompanied with symptoms that include severe physical pain and cognitive difficulties. Also, affected patients and their loved ones may be able to file a lawsuit and recover damages.
