There is currently an E. coli O157 outbreak in Wisconsin. Between November 13 and November 15, the Wisconsin Division of Public Health (DPH) Communicable Diseases Epidemiology Section received a significant increase in E. coli O157 cases. However, officials do not know which food is hurting people.

About E. coli

E. coli are bacteria that normally live in the intestines of healthy people and animals. While most strains are harmless, the one seen in Wisconsin, 0157: H7, is a specific strain that can cause serious illness. Symptoms of E.Coli typically begin two to eight days after consuming the bacteria, although most patients become ill three or four days after consumption. These symptoms include severe stomach cramps, diarrhea, and vomiting. Most people recover in five to seven days. However, those most at risk include the very young, the very old and individuals with compromised immune systems.

Wisconsin E. coli Outbreak

Currently, officials have received nine reports in Wisconsin of E. coli O157. There are three women from the northwest part of the state. However, there has not been a consistent food between women. All ate salads, but it is unknown the type. One developed hemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS). This is a deadly complication from the virus, which causes kidney failure.  HUS can affect anyone, however, children under age 5 are most susceptible. Warning signs usually start 5-10 days after the diarrhea states. These include fever, abdominal pain, pale skin, fatigue, small bruises, bleeding from the nose and mouth, and decreased urination.  Experts worry that this outbreak could spread to other states.
