Each year romaine lettuce recalls keep escalating. Since 2017, contaminated romaine has sparked four major E. coli outbreaks throughout the US. Plus, the leaves infected 138 people in 25 states with E. coli bacteria.

About E. coli

Romaine safety was called into question after the CDC identified it to be contaminated with E. coli. E. coli is bacteria that normally live in the intestines of healthy people and animals. While most strains are harmless, the one found in recent patients can cause serious illness. Symptoms of E.Coli typically begin two to eight days after consuming the bacteria, although most patients become ill three or four days after consumption. These symptoms include severe stomach cramps, diarrhea, and vomiting. Most people recover in five to seven days. However, those most at risk include the very young, the very old and individuals with compromised immune systems.

Escalating Romaine Lettuce Recalls

It seems like every year it is full of romaine lettuce recalls. This is due to romaine more at risk for harboring dangerous bacteria. Unlike other vegetables, leafy greens grow near the ground in open fields. This makes them more susceptible to germs from the soil, water and feces. Since there are so many avenues of how an outbreak occurs, it makes it difficult to stop these romaine lettuce recalls.

For example, the 2018 Yuma County, Arizona outbreak happened from a contaminated irrigation canal. However, experts do not know how E. coli entered the canal. It isn’t just the watering system, but the even the packaging facility can be responsible. A few infected leaves if not caught can contaminate hundreds of pre-packaged bags.

This means that thousands can be injured and no one knows why or can protect them.

E. Coli is bacteria that can cause serious, sometimes fatal, infections in humans. The CDC estimates the bacteria causes 2,000 hospitalizations each year. Plus, 10% go on to develop more serious complications like hemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS). HUS can cause kidney failure, damage to the central nervous system, and ultimately death.
