About Salmonella

Salmonella FruitSalmonella FruitSalmonella infection (salmonellosis) is a common bacterial disease that affects the intestinal tract. The bacteria usually live in animal and human intestines and shed through feces. Consuming contaminated water or food spreads the infection to humans. Symptoms last two to seven days. Diarrhea may last up to 10 days, however, it may take several months before bowels return to normal. However, salmonella can develop into typhoid fever. This is a deadly disease. About 300 people get typhoid fever in the United States each year. About 22 million cases of typhoid fever and 200,000 related deaths occur worldwide each year.

Salmonella Fruit Linked to Caito Foods

On April 12, 2019, Caito Foods recalled pre-cut watermelon, honeydew melon, cantaloupe, and pre-cut fruit medley products packaged in clear, plastic clamshell containers. The CDC and FDA tracked the distribution to 16 states. These include Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, West Virginia, and Wisconsin. Stores like Target, Kroger, Trader Joe’s, Walmart and Whole Foods sold the salmonella fruit under their own labels.
Thus far, 117 people became infected along with 32 needed hospitalization. Thus far, there are no deaths, but receiving information during an outbreak is notoriously slow.
