The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) announced that the salmonella egg outbreak has now spanned to several states. Illnesses began in November 2017 and are still causing people to be hospitalized with serious health problems. Consumers, restaurants, and retailers have purchased the contaminated eggs. In some cases, diarrhea associated with salmonella infection can be so dehydrating as to require prompt medical attention. Life-threatening complications are possible if salmonella spreads.
About Salmonella
Salmonella infection (salmonellosis) is a common bacterial disease that affects the intestinal tract. The bacteria usually live in animal and human intestines and is shed through feces. Consuming contaminated water or food spreads the infection to humans. Symptoms last two to seven days. Diarrhea may last up to 10 days, however, it may take several months before bowels return to normal. Salmonella can develop into typhoid fever. This is a deadly disease. About 300 people get typhoid fever in the United States each year. About 22 million cases of typhoid fever and 200,000 related deaths occur worldwide each year.
Salmonella Egg Outbreak
On April 13, Rose Acre Farms recalled over 206 million eggs that were sold in many states under different brand names. There are 35 people with the outbreak strain of Salmonella Braenderup. No deaths have been reported. More than a third of the victims have had such severe symptoms that they were admitted to hospitals.
Several brands of eggs are subject to the recall. These included the Great Value brand sold by Walmart and the Crystal Farms brand sold by Target. Some of the other recalled brands include Coburn Farms, Country Daybreak, Food Lion, Glenview, Great Value, Nelms, Publix, Sunshine Farms, and Sunups. In addition to shipping the eggs to grocery stores, Rose Acre Farms sent them to restaurants and other countries.
Contaminated Eggs
To see if your eggs have salmonella, check for the following plant numbers: P-1065 and another set of numbers between 011 and 102 (the Julian date), or, for Publix and Sunups egg cartons, plant number P-1359D and Julian date 048A or 049A with Best By dates of APR 02 and APR 03. Public health officials expect additional cases due to salmonella’s lag time. The CDC received only 25 reports so far. Out of the reports, 88% reported eating eggs before getting sick. Sixteen people reported eating various egg dishes at different restaurants. The restaurants reported using shell eggs.
