About Salmonella

Raw Turkey 300x169Salmonella infection (salmonellosis) is a common bacterial disease that affects the intestinal tract. The bacteria usually live in animal and human intestines and shed through feces. Consuming contaminated water or food spreads the infection to humans. Typically, people with salmonella infection have no symptoms. Others that develop symptoms have them within 8 to 72 hours. However, most doctors misdiagnosis the infection as stomach flu.
Symptoms last two to seven days. Diarrhea may last up to 10 days, however, it may take several months before bowels return to normal. However, salmonella can develop into typhoid fever. This is a deadly disease. About 300 people get typhoid fever in the United States each year. About 22 million cases of typhoid fever and 200,000 related deaths occur worldwide each year.

Raw Turkey & Salmonella

Currently,  there are 90 people from 26 states sick from consuming raw turkey. Among them, 40 people have been hospitalized, but no deaths have been reported. However, the outbreak started in November, and the CDC has linked salmonella to various brands and products that include raw turkey and live turkeys as well as pet food that contains raw turkey. Minnesota has the largest number of salmonella cases at 13. Other states include Illinois, New York, and Texas.
In interviews with health officials, there hasn’t been a singular brand or type. Of 61 people interviewed, 37 reported preparing or eating turkey products that were purchased raw, including ground turkey, turkey pieces, and whole turkey before they began experiencing symptoms. Two became sick after pets in their home ate raw ground turkey pet food. Three of the sick work in a facility that raises or processes turkeys.
