Greenbelt Greenhouse LTD of British Columbia, Canada is recalling all Greenbelt Microgreen products with the dates from April 24 to April 30. The microgreens are contaminated with the pathogen, Listeria. This virus can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems.

About Listeria

Microgreens recalledA Listeria infection is a foodborne bacterial illness that can be very serious for pregnant women and people with impaired immune systems. Improperly processed deli meats and unpasteurized milk products breed the bacteria. Plus, it can survive refrigeration and even freezing. However, it is rare for healthy people to get a listeria infection, but the disease can be fatal to unborn babies and newborns.

Microgreens Recalled

Canadian grower Greenbelt Greenhouse is recalling microgreens that may be contaminated with Listeria.The company noted that several types of the brand’s microgreens could have the dangerous pathogen. These include arugula, broccoli, fresh mix, sweet & crunchy mix, spicy mix, pea shoots, sunflower, wheatgrass, and spring pea. Also, stores sold these products with expiration dates ranging from April through May of 2018.  According to a release from the company, the problem originated in their greenhouse in Maple Ridge, British Columbia. The company distributed the tainted microgreens to American states Oregon and Washington.

Listeria Symptoms

When a person is infected and develops symptoms of Listeria infection, the resulting illness is called listeriosis.
