The FDA is recalling bagged green beans and butternut squash after investigators found listeria contamination. Walmarts in multiple states sold the contaminated products in its stores. Now, thousands of unaware consumers could become gravely ill.
About Listeria
A Listeria infection is a foodborne bacterial illness that can be very serious for pregnant women and people with impaired immune systems. Improperly processed deli meats and unpasteurized milk products breed the bacteria. Plus, it can survive refrigeration and even freezing. However, it is rare for healthy people to get a listeria infection, but the disease can be fatal to unborn babies and newborns.
Squash and Green Bean Listeria Outbreak
After a routine test of food contact surfaces tested positive for listeria, Southern Specialties Inc. of Pompano Beach, Florida is voluntarily recalled select bags of Walmart’s Marketside brand green beans and butternut squash. The company shipped the recalled product to one retail distribution center on February 17th. However, multiple states received the contaminated produce including stores in Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, and Virginia.
