After over a hundred people became ill with E. coli, The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention thinks it could be another ground beef E. coli outbreak. However, the agency doesn’t know where it started. It continues to look at grocery stores and restaurants people ate beef at before becoming ill.
About E. coli
E. coli is a bacteria that normally live in the intestines of healthy people and animals. While most strains are harmless, the one found in recent patients, O103 is a specific strain that can cause serious illness. Symptoms of E. coli typically begin two to eight days after consuming the bacteria, although most patients become ill three or four days after consumption. These symptoms include severe stomach cramps, diarrhea, and vomiting. Most people recover in five to seven days. However, those most at risk include the very young, the elderly and individuals with compromised immune systems.
Ground Beef E. coli Outbreak
There are 109 people from six states infected with the strain of E. coli implicated in the latest outbreak. Georgia, Indiana, Kentucky, Ohio, Tennessee, Virginia, and Kentucky all reported incidences of the ground beef E. coli outbreak. Kentucky has the highest amount with 54 injuries. Also, 17 people needed hospitalization. Patient ages range from 1 to 83 years old.
Seventeen people have been hospitalized, but no one has died or suffered from kidney failure. The patients range in age from 1 to 83 years old. The CDC is not recommending that consumers avoid eating ground beef or that retailers stop serving or selling ground beef at this time. Last year, an E. coli outbreak linked to romaine lettuce sickened 62 people across 16 states and Washington, D.C.

E. coli are bacteria that can cause serious, sometimes fatal, infections in humans. The CDC estimates the bacteria causes 2,000 hospitalizations each year. Plus, 10% go on to develop more serious complications like hemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS). HUS can cause kidney failure, damage to the central nervous system, and ultimately death.
